When Should You Repair Your Air Conditioner and When Should You Replace It

Your AC is chugging away through another Edmonton summer and suddenly your cold air stops blowing. You call an A/C system professional to come to your home and evaluate the problem and the next thing you know you’re going to have to pay an arm and a leg for the repair. So at what point should you give up and just upgrade your current A/C equipment?

Age

Naturally the older your system gets, the more it’s likely to breakdown and lose efficiency. Air conditioning systems over eight years old are now much less efficient than the more recent energy-efficient equipment available today. Additionally, if your AC is more than 15 years old, odds are you are going to put in more money over time to keep it functioning than if you just invested in a new, energy-efficient air conditioner.

Money

To continue with the theme above, at some point it’s going to begin costing more to buy parts and repair issues than it would to just invest in a new air conditioning system. Another issue to note is R-22, the usual refrigerant for old air conditioning equipment, is being discontinued for the welfare of the environment. If your air conditioning system was assembled before 2010, you will soon see a spike in the charge for your refrigerant until you upgrade your system.

Efficiency

Technology is continuously advancing and with that comes more energy-efficient A/C systems. Systems now tend to cost less to use because they can cool the home more efficiently, lowering your cooling bills – and who doesn’t like that?
