A lack of system maintenance can cost you. On average, an inefficient heat pump could eat up to 10 to 25 percent more energy, based on findings from the U.S. Department of Energy. It’s also more likely to become damaged or fail prematurely.

Troubleshooting Your Heat Pump Problem

Heat pump not running right? Check out our list of common problems below.

  • No heat. Make sure your thermostat is positioned to “on” and “heat.” A circuit breaker may have tripped, but in some cases it’s because the thermostat itself doesn’t work with heat pumps.
  • Insufficient heat. Dirty filters, fan and coils may restrict airflow and wreck your system. Replace the system’s air filter every month or so, avoid letting the coils and fan get dirty, and remove yard debris that may have accumulated around it. Your system could also be dealing with clogged ductwork, damaged valves or poor refrigeration flow.
  • Cold air instead of heat. Heating that comes from a heat pump won’t be as warm as a standard, forced air type of furnace. But if things still feel too cold, switch the thermostat to emergency heat along with at least 5 degrees higher than the inside temperature. If you end up getting warm air, there may be a problem with your outdoor unit. Cold air likely stems from an issue with the thermostat or air handler. And in some cases, the problem is because your system has gone into defrost mode so it can avoid freezing. When you’ve noticed frost or ice sitting on the outdoor coil, your unit may have a faulty defroster timer or control module, or you may have a refrigerant leak, reducing the total supply.
  • Heat pump starts and stops frequently. Swap out your system’s air filter before monitoring your thermostat, because it may need to be recalibrated or need new batteries. When it’s cold and the heat pump is running constantly, the thermostat could be set incorrectly. Also, some models of heat pumps have trouble heating around 25 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Rattling, grinding or squealing noises. If you hear a rattling sound, you may need to tighten the cover panels. But should you notice noise you’d describe as scraping, grinding, squeaking or squealing, turn off your system and contact Rob's Albertan Service Experts. Those noises may point to a serious problem.
