What to Expect During an AC Repair Appointment

So, without notice your AC system needs repair at your Edmonton home and you’re not sure what to expect. It’s nerve-wracking enough to let an air conditioner repair technician into your home, but then to not be sure what they’re going to do can add another level of anxiety. Not to worry! Rob's Albertan Service Experts is here to fill you in on the basic A/C system repair process so you will be ready when an expert A/C system service technician needs to pay you a visit.

AC Repair Starts Simple

When the repairman arrives to your home, the first thing they will most likely do is request to see your thermostat. It might sound silly, but they need to inspect it to confirm that it’s not just a thermostat settings issue. The service tech will verify the thermostat is flipped to cool and then lower the temperature to see if that will start up the AC. A faulty or incorrectly connected wire could be all that’s keeping you from a comfortable home.

If this doesn’t resolve the trouble, the technician may ask you to see the circuit breaker box. They might switch the circuit switches to off and then back to on to see if that resets the system.

Getting to the nitty-gritty of AC Repair

The technician will then likely request to see the air conditioning equipment. Same as a doctor, the technician will commence their trial and error discovery process. There are many things that could be the cause for an air conditioner that isn’t operating properly, and it’s up the repairman to check all the possible sources starting from the most normal issues to the least. The diagnostic process could take anywhere from 5 to 60 minutes or more.

During the air conditioner diagnosis, they will probably check the air filter to confirm it’s not clogged or in need of replacing. They will examine the air conditioner’s refrigerant levels, make sure the air condenser fan is rotating properly, make sure that the size of your A/C system is right for the size of your home, and check the wiring, electronics and safety controls.

Once the A/C system service tech has pinpointed the trouble, they should explain all your options to you. The discussion will usually start with the technician explaining what the issue is, what part (if any) failed, how or why it failed, and how that part makes your AC operate.

The technician will then go into your choices, which will include replacing the part and fixing the problem, but could also entail upgrading parts of the AC system, the air conditioner itself, or your entire heating and AC system. In some cases, it may make more sense to buy a whole new heating and cooling system, specifically if the AC is past its prime, or susceptible to breaking down again and end up costing you more for air conditioning repairs by the time it’s all said and done. The repairman will go over how much time, effort, and cost it will take to rectify the problem.

The repairman might at this point explain what could have been done to avoid the issue or part failure and how to keep a future problem from happening. This typically includes being proactive with annual maintenance, which not only helps prevent an AC breakdown, but in most experiences also keeps your air conditioning warranty valid. Most expert air conditioner repair businesses will offer an annual service plan so you don’t have to stress about making future heating and cooling tune-up appointments for your home.

Finally, they will discuss the process for repairing the failed part or fixing the trouble. If you determine that AC repair is better for you than investing in an AC system upgrade, the technician will order any parts required and set up your next appointment to fix the AC. Or, if the part needed is already available on their truck, they will move forward with the AC repair work with your permission.
