Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is a great organization that provides financial support to people in the construction trade who have life-altering injuries. Once a year the association honors numerous recipients with a grant and earlier in the year the Joseph Groh Foundation was happy to introduce Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, born in Pakistan, received his MBA from the University of Chicago and in 2003 bought ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and obtained his HVAC and general contracting license. Ten years later, Adil experienced a massive stroke at the young age of 48. He lost the ability to use his left arm and the experience left his left leg majorly impaired, resulting in foot drop. Due to the fact he had to use a heavy brace to walk, his muscles began to deteriorate and his doctors were concerned that he would eventually be permanently in a wheelchair.

Because the stroke left him unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their single source of income, putting financial strain on the couple with three children in college and one in elementary school. Their spirits were lifted when Adil was a good candidate for the WalkAid System, a device that incorporates functional electrical stimulation to help a person with Adil’s condition walk again. Unfortunately, Adil and Laila were not able to afford the WalkAid System in addition to the extensive rehab that would be required so he could understand how to use it.

Fortunately, a professional at WalkAid directed the couple to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, thanks to the wonderful grant, Adil was able to get the WalkAid System and has seen great success. His muscle is starting to regenerate and not atrophy, bringing optimism back to Adil and Laila.
