The Ban on R22 Refrigerant
R-22 Refrigerant Phasing Out
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that R-22 refrigerant (also known as the brand FREON®), a common refrigerant for residential heat pumps and air conditioning systems, is harmful to the environment. The EPA is regulating the production and use of refrigerants and in the future all the air conditioning and heat pump refrigerants that contain chlorine will be eliminated.
How does this affect you?
If your home has a heating and air conditioning system that uses R-22 refrigerant, you don’t need to panic or run out to purchase a new system. Production of R-22 refrigerant is winding down, and while the costs will rise, production will go on until 2020. After that time recycled refrigerants should be accessible for a while.
As a result of the change, Rob's Albertan Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning in Edmonton provides R410A, a more environmentally friendly choice for refrigerants that lessens the damage to the ozone layer. Up to half of home energy costs may go toward heating and cooling the home. We’re committed to offering products that are less taxing on the environment while achieving your desire for a comfortable heating and cooling system.
